I'm all for a free LAV. It helps get the battle started faster, especially on large maps. I think the freebies, however, should be basically made of tissue paper. And collisions with mercs and solid objects should cause serious damage to the free...

I should mention also that an authentication solution like passwords makes espionage more difficult while not making it impossible. It also adds an intelligence-gathering element to the spy game, which I (for one) find kinda cool.

Indeed, it doesn't necessarily have to be a smoke grenade, just something that can be used to screen maneuvers. If smoke is too low-tech, perhaps a 2D vertical wall or an area of extreme blur (processor intensive, I know).
